Volunteering FAQ

  • How long is the Volunteering Programme?

    Our programme runs throughout the year.


    You can volunteer for  any number of days that suit you from 1 day to 12 weeks. However, to ensure a worthwhile experience we recommend at least 1 week.

  • What does the Volunteering Programme offer?

    The programme includes:


    • Free meals and accommodation.
    • Practical experience with our sustainable development projects
    • Immerse yourself in various local cultures which vary from tribe to tribe.
    • Tasty, organic and fresh traditional dishes, with your dietary preferences.
    • Basic country’s official language lessons
    • Basic tribal language lessons
    • Airport pickup and drop off

    Plus great discounts on various touristic activities such as guided nature walks, birdwatching, group tours, wildlife safaris, Zanzibar adventure, Bagamoyo slave trade museums, Kilimanjaro climb or mini Kilimanjaro climb, German history and many other fun tourist activities.

  • What qualities should Olden Is Golden volunteers possess?

    We accept international volunteers who are enthusiastic, adaptable, have a can do attitude, and are able to work with people of different cultural backgrounds.

  • What are the requirements for volunteers?

    Prospective volunteers must meet the following criteria:


    • You must be over 18 years of age.
    • Must provide a police criminal record from each country you have lived.
    • Must provide 3 references
    • Must be able to speak, even at an intermediate level, one of the International Languages such as English, French, Spanish, depending on what the country of your destination speaks.
    • Must have life and travel insurance.
    • You must provide a copy of your passport with 10+ months validity.

    A placement commitment donation fee of EURO €25 for a day, €275 for a week, €500 for 2 weeks or €975 for 2 to 4 weeks is required. This commitment fee is used to cover funding for your meals, accommodation and to advance our projects. 


    You are required to pay this fee within 10 days of receiving the volunteer acceptance email from us. This commitment fee is non-refundable.

  • What expenses need to be covered by volunteers?

    You are expected to be able to cover costs for your return flight, living stipend, insurance, visa, and vaccines.


    The cost of living would be lower in Africa compared to western countries.


    All in all a lving stipend depends on the individual preferences.
