Impact in Action: Moshi, Kilimanjaro – FREE Check-up for Olden Is Golden Africa Members at KCMC Hospital

The power of our youth-led caregiving model is already transforming lives on the ground:

  • Comprehensive Care Access: Over 70 members of the Olden Is Golden Africa elderly community in Moshi gathered today for a vital, FREE medical check-up focusing on nose, eyes, ears, and throat health. This special event coincided with the UN's International Day of Older Persons, celebrated annually on October 1st.
  • Specialized Expertise: This health drive was made possible through a seamless partnership with KCMC Referral Hospital, bringing expert clinical care directly to our seniors.
  • Driven by Youth: From coordinating logistics and welcoming elders to assisting specialists and managing transport, our youth team orchestrated every detail to make the event an overwhelming success.

Building a sustainable, compassionate future for elder care in Tanzania requires vision, partnership, and action. By placing our passionate youth at the center and surrounding them with world-class expertise, we are ensuring that growing older remains golden.

A heartfelt thank you to our incredible youth volunteers, our partners at KCMC Referral Hospital, and our U.S. and international geriatric specialists for turning this vision into reality!

Ageless Spirit: Olden Is Golden Africa at the 2026 Kilimanjaro Marathon

Under the watchful eye of the "Roof of Africa," a group of remarkable individuals proved that age is truly just a number. This year, members of Olden Is Golden (OIG) Africa took to the streets of Moshi to participate in the Kilimanjaro International Marathon, bringing a powerful message of visibility and vitality for Tanzania’s elderly.

Running for More Than a Medal

While the elite runners chased record times, the OIG team ran for dignity, health, and community. For many of these elders—affectionately known as the "Golden Stars"—taking part in the 5km Fun Run was a testament to the active lifestyle the NGO promotes through its daily fitness classes and health initiatives.

The Power of Visibility

The sight of the elderly participants, supported by the youth and the OIG management team, was a highlight for many spectators. In a culture where the elderly can sometimes feel isolated or "left behind" by the fast pace of modern life, their presence at such a massive international event served as a reminder that:

  • Experience is valuable: They are the foundation of the community.
  • Health is a lifelong journey: Staying active in the "golden years" is essential for mental and physical well-being.
  • Intergenerational support works: The youth of Moshi cheered alongside the elders, bridging the gap between generations.

Resilience in Action

The marathon was not without its challenges. One member faced a fall during the race, but in true Olden Is Golden fashion, the community rallied around her. This moment highlighted the NGO’s commitment to its members—not just during the high points, but in providing reports, medical oversight, and genuine care when things get tough.

Setting the Standard

As the founding chapter of OIG Africa, the Tanzania team is setting a "gold standard" for future chapters across the continent. By participating in the Kilimanjaro Marathon, they haven't just completed a race; they have sparked a conversation about how we view aging in Africa.

"Getting older shouldn't mean feeling left behind. At the Kilimanjaro Marathon, our elders showed the world that they are still here, they are still strong, and they are still golden."

Support the Movement

The OIG Africa team continues to work toward establishing their first Community Hub in Moshi. This centre will serve as a vital resource for the elderly, offering food security programmes, health screenings, and fitness classes, alongside a vibrant social hub featuring a cinema, community events, and ICT training.

Visit of Dr Ford to Olden is Golden

The Olden Is Golden Africa management team in Tanzania had the pleasure of welcoming Dr. Ford to their offices in Moshi, Kilimanjaro.

Dr. Ford was thoroughly impressed by their work and high spirits.

Following a brief meeting and tour, Dr. Ford stayed overnight at the Kilimanjaro Forest Lodge and Camping Site—a peaceful mountain retreat just 15 minutes by car from Moshi town.

The lodge's serene, tranquil atmosphere provided the perfect setting to unwind after his busy schedule of travel and meetings. With stunning views, lush greenery, and untouched forest, it is a true haven for a stressed mind.

Ending 2025 in style!

Olden Is Golden Africa Tanzania marked the end of 2025 in style by having an annual gala.

They had delicious food, drinks and danced to the 60’s and 70’s tunes. It’s nice to see our elderly letting their hair down and enjoying themselves, and why not ? Olden is indeed Golden!

Many thanks to our anonymous sponsor who paid for the party.

Members of Olden is Golden group in Kilimanjaro, Tanzania Chapter in their recent visits for the needy in their communities.

In the picture is David whom they visited and provided him with basic needs. David is paralysed in both limbs and has problems with his hands too and in desperate need of a wheelchair and somewhere nice to live.

Our Approach

This calls for collaborative efforts from different state and non-state actors to address the challenges the elderly population is facing to ensure that they are well-cared for and can realise their full potential. Most of all, we want to help them to become visible, valued, and very much part of their communities. This requires a multi-sectoral and multi-pronged approach, working on a grassroots level as much as on a country-wide scale.

Our Impact

  • We’re There When You Need It

We believe in helping where it’s most needed, providing support especially for those elderly who are extra vulnerable. Whether it’s through crisis, conflict, or hardship, we are here to support the older generation. We set up food banks where they can do the most help, provide temporary accommodation in times of emergency, and other measures that meet the situation.

  • Learn New Skills in ICT & Fitness

From online essentials to fitness classes, we want to give you the abilities to feel part of your community and enrich your lives. With free basic ICT training including how to stay safe online, you can unlock new avenues and stay informed on your interests. You can also get a whole range of fitness classes on us, all of which have been designed with the older person in mind.

  • Making Health Accessible for the Elderly

As we age, it can be inevitable that some health concerns pop up. These can lead to isolation, loneliness, and feelings of being a burden. We help older people feel comfortable and safe in talking about their health, providing access to free healthcare that doesn’t judge and helps you stay active in your community. This includes free medical checkups and free physio.

  • Enjoy Your Golden Olden Years

We believe in putting ‘Olden is Golden’ into action! We want to show that your older years don’t have to be isolated or lonely. From fun clubs and trips (even safaris!) to disco nights and social events, it’s time to enjoy your golden years.

  • Make A Lasting Legacy

We endeavour to make the elderly part of the community. The first approach is to train and empower the youth into becoming the carers and companions of previous generations, bridging the divine and ending old-aged loneliness. The second approach is to inspire the next generation by creating a stream of knowledge sharing. Our knowledge clubs are also the perfect space for older people to share their stories and educate their communities’ younger people with life lessons. These can then be passed onto future generations for an enduring, positive legacy.
